This landmark event is organised by the Committee on Data (CODATA) and the World Data System (WDS) of the International Science Council (ISC), and the Research Data Alliance (RDA). It brings together data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers and data stewards from disciplines across the globe to explore how best to exploit the data revolution to improve science and society through data-driven discovery and innovation. IDW combines the RDA Plenary Meeting, the biannual meeting of this international member organisation working to develop and support global infrastructure facilitating data sharing and reuse, and SciDataCon, the scientific conference addressing the frontiers of data in research organised by CODATA and WDS. Two editions have taken place to date:

IDW 2016, 11–17 September 2016, Denver, Colorado, USA; attended by 840 data professionals and researchers from all disciplines and from across the globe.
IDW 2018, 5–8 November 2018, Gaborone, Botswana; attended by more than 850 international data professionals and researchers.

THE FOUNDING ORGANISATIONS WISH FOR INTERNATIONAL DATA WEEK TO BECOME A BIENNIAL MEETING PLACE FOR THE GLOBAL DATA COMMUNITY. WE ARE THEREFORE INVITING PROPOSALS TO HOST THE THIRD AND FOURTH EDITIONS OF THIS EXCITING EVENT IN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021 AND 2023 RESPECTIVELY.

The primary objective of the conference is to bring together a large and representative part of the global data community. IDW 2016 and 2018 were huge successes and we want to continue that trajectory and increase impact. These are important times in the world of data and we seek local partners and a venue that will help us communicate that buzz.

International Data Week is a global and inclusive event. The organisers are keen to engage with cities and countries where we have not held an IDW or related meeting before. The organisers encourage proposals from the global South; proposals from the global North should show how they will work with the organisers to maximise participation from LMICs. Wherever the proposal comes from it will be important to demonstrate how the partnership will advance to missions of the founding organisations, ensure the impact of IDW and enhance membership and engagement with the three organisations.

Applications should demonstrate that local hosts have access to a suitable venue; strong support from local organisations and government; good connections to universities, industry, and research organisations in the country and region; and solid financial support.

We envision IDW 2021 and 2023 as four-day events that integrate the activities of a SciDataCon international conference and an RDA Plenary Meeting. Each IDW is expected to include both research sessions and focused working meetings, as well as broad plenary sessions of general interest. The days before and after each event will be set aside for the business and governance meetings of CODATA, RDA, and WDS, and potentially other co-located meetings.

SciDataCon 2018SciDataCon 2018 will address the theme of ‘The Digital Frontiers of Global Science’. In a hyperconnected world where the internet is pervasive and web technologies are driving major changes in our lives, research has become more than ever before digital and international. Furthermore, the major societal and scientific challenges facing humanity in this digital age are profoundly global in character, requiring the participation of researchers from all countries and disciplines. The data revolution is also a major source of the scientific opportunities to address these issues but to realise these potentials the frontiers of science, data analysis and stewardship must be advanced. Likewise, the data revolution must be inclusive, benefiting all, and harnessing all energies: no parts of the world and no disciplines should be left behind.

SciDataCon 2018 seeks to explore the digital frontiers of global science by bringing together research and practice papers from a wide range of perspectives. The scope is explicitly broad and inclusive, addressing all aspects of the role of data in research.

The high-level themes of the 2018 edition are:

the digital frontiers of global science;

a global and inclusive data revolution;

applications, progress and challenges of data intensive research;

data infrastructure and enabling practices for international and collaborative research.

An expanded overview of these themes is provided here http://www.scidatacon.org/conference/IDW2018/conference_themes_and_scope/.Summary of Key Dates

Deadline for session proposals [EXTENDED]: 19 February 2017

Selected sessions will be notified by 28 February 2018.

International Data Week 2018, coming for the first time to Africa, will take place on 5-8 November, in Gaborone, Botswana. This decision has been taken in order to avoid clashes with the UN World Data Forum (22-24 October https://undataforum.org/WorldDataForum/) and the Plenary Meeting of the Group on Earth Observations (31 Oct-1 Nov http://www.earthobservations.org/meetings.php).

For this data conference taking place in Africa and which will contain as one of its major themes the issues around data for the sustainable development goals and data for innovation, we felt it was important to avoid the clash with the UN Forum. Similarly, the use of earth observation and remote sensing data will be an important theme in International Data Week and GEO (including major flagships, the Data Sharing Working Group and AfriGEOSS) is an important partner of the organisers and was a sponsor of the first International Data Week in Denver in 2016.

The organisers regret any difficulties this may cause to our community and participants. However, as we still have 11 months to go before the event, we felt the date could be changed without excessive inconvenience and that it was important to act as good citizens and partners and – to the extent possible – avoid direct competition with related events.

International Data Week comprises SciDataCon http://www.scidatacon.org/, a conference for research and practice papers addressing all aspects of data in research, and the 12th Plenary Meeting of the Research Data Alliance https://rd-alliance.org/plenaries/rda-twelfth-plenary-meeting-part-international-data-week-2018-gaborone-botswana

In line with the change of date the deadline for session proposals for SciDataCon has been extended to Friday 2 February 2018: http://www.scidatacon.org/IDW2018/

Please consult the call for session proposals http://www.scidatacon.org/conference/IDW2018/call_for_sessions/ and the conference themes at http://www.scidatacon.org/conference/IDW2018/conference_themes_and_scope/

Related events associated with CODATA, WDS, RDA and the Botswana Open Data Open Science Forum will change dates accordingly. The CODATA General Assembly will take place on 9-10 November 2018.

The organisers of International Data Week are:

The University of Botswana on behalf of the Botswana Open Data Open Science Forum

CODATA, the Committee on Data of the International Council of Science (ICSU) http://www.codata.org/
